Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Definition:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFS is a condition of prolonged and often severe tiredness or excessive weakness or fatigue, which is usually not relieved simply via rest.
Symptoms:
The common symptoms of CFS are the following: excessive fatigue or tiredness, which is not commonly cleared up via simple rest. The fatigue is severe enough that it oftentimes restricts the mobility, function ability, and activity of individual with CFS. Some experience mild fevers, sore throats, muscle weakness, muscle aches (myalgia), sleep disturbances (hypersomnia, excessive amounts of rest or insomnia, lack of rest.), headaches, joint pain, joint swelling, tender lymph nodes (in the neck or armpit areas), unclear or "fuzzy" thinking, confusion, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, depression, and so on.
Cause:
Many researchers speculate that the main cause of CFS may be a virus, such as human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6); however, no distinct viral cause has been identified. Some recent studies have shown that chronic fatigue syndrome may be caused by inflammation of pathways in the nervous system; and that this inflammation may be some sort of immune response or autoimmune process. CFS may occur when a viral infection or illness is complicated by an inadequate or dysfunctional immune response or by other factors, such as age, prior illness, stress, environment, improper diet and lifestyle, or genetic disposition.
