Glaucoma
Definition:
Glaucoma is a group of diseases which consists of elevated intraocular pressure, optic nerve injury, and visual loss. Glaucoma is more common in older patients and in certain ethnic groups.
Symptoms:
Glaucoma has no symptoms. Vision stays normal, and there is no pain. If glaucoma remains untreated, people may see things clearly in front of them, they miss objects to the side and out of the corner of their eye.
Without treatment, people have no side vision. It seems as though they are looking through a tunnel, and over time, the remaining forward vision may decrease until there is no vision left.
Cause:
Most cases of glaucoma may be caused by a gene (and its encoded protein) which becomes highly active in response to biological stress.
Within the eye, sources of biological stress such as trauma or injury generate injurious forms of oxygen called "free radicals," which can damage cells and contribute to glaucoma, according to Jon R. Polansky, MD, an associate professor of ophthalmology at UCSF.
